The FrankenFlash Project started two years ago. The first objective was to raise awareness about the problem of false capacity USB pen sticks, memory cards and mp players being sold on eBay. The second was to shut down eBay sellers who sold fake memory items to eBay members. The third is to expose other internet sites that sell fake flash memory products.
Progress has been made as eBay buyers fight back. eBay, however has done little to address the problem. According to SOSFakeFlash the fraud continues to escalate. The sale of fake flash memory products continues on eBay. See: Crises on Ebay For Fake Flash Memory Products Sold In 32GB 64GB 128GB 256GB – SOSFakeFlash Reports.
Analysis of data, eBay monitoring made it clear a new approach was necessary. SOSFakeFlash announced a new initiative: Operation Fake Flash Storm. All efforts of project members are being channelled to assist.
TechReporters wonders what eBay has to say. How can FakeMemorySentinel detect so many sellers when eBay is unable to?
According to the FrankenFlash Project, the greatest threat to consumers is the new “HIT AND RUN” approach of fraudulent sellers on eBay. They list using multiple item listings, usually “BUY NOW”, sell hundreds in a few days or thousands of units in a week, then quickly deregister. In some cases, eBay appears to be running after the SOSFakeFlash and FakeMemorySentinel fire engines. They suspend the sellers, so they might remove all seller listing traces and the scope of the fraud against members. Fortunately FakeMemorySentinel captures listing information for the Global public to review.
Should the sale of flash memory products be banned for sale on eBay? SOSFakeFlash thinks so. On April 1st, 2010 they have 983 sellers who have sold fake flash memory items: mp players, memory cards and usb flash drives on their lists.
TechReporters asks:
How many sellers must SOSFakeFlash document, before eBay realizes that these products can not be offered on eBay due to so many scam artists willing to prey upon the naivety of eBay members who are ill informed about the true costs of flash memory chips? The implications are serious not only in terms of money but the terrible consequences these devices bring – data loss.
Will 1,000 sellers be enough? 2,000 sellers? How many will it take? The problem has now entered it’s 8th year! What internet site has documented more fraudulent eBay sellers?
