You could not have said it better, Gerry!
I am an IT person myself. Classified as a dinasaur. I know what a punch card is. I remember what a screen was in the old days. Paper spitting from a telex. We killed a lot of trees back then.
I also have this neighbour who finds their PC’s are too slow these days. Solution? Go out and buy a new one. Okay, it is fast for now, but in a few months? Crawls. To prove my point I did a demo on a laptop. It out performed the lastest additon my neighbour bought.
LOL!
I used a Pentium II at 366Mhz and only 250 ram with XP!
It was fun to see the astonishment as it flew on the interent and boot up. The secret? Tweeking. Understanding the OS. And a nice fast new hard disk, along with older not so memory greedy programs.
Who said new is better? Faster machines, more memory? HA! They just make more bloated software that consumes it all. Software companies and their developers are darn LAZY! They don’t optimise anymore. Who cares? Let the memory and processor take care of it.
As for the internet, the same applies. Sloppy. I remember when it was possible to open up 8 eBay windows under W98 to bid on different auctions ending in a few minutites of each other. Try that now.
The objective is on consume. Not on quality. Force people into a never ending cirle of upgrade, update.
Fact is, if you understand your PC or laptop, a lot is not necessary. If you don’t you better upgrade and update.
KittyFireFlash raised interesting questions. I have to agree with a lot of what he says. I know him and he is a thinker.
I also think that a lot of what is going on is unfair to parts of the world that can’t affort all this new technology. They are being excluded, marginalized. A lot of people think everyone is on high speed internet. Not true. Many still use dial up. Even in western countries, in remote regions they don’t have access, not enough people, so internet providers are not interested.
A lot of people ask my advise on buying this or that in technology.
My answer? Do you really need it, NOW? Can it pay for itself in one year? If the answer is no to one of these, I say wait.
Members of the FrankenFlash Project have studied the problem on fake flash technology for a long time. All victims have only one conclusion. They are sorry. They are also wiser and don’t look for bargains anymore. Better one usb flash drive that can be trusted, then 5 fakes.
We don’t see the problem ending Gerry. Not until the technology changes.
Cost’s for nand flash chips is rising. It is not going down. It has to do with production being scaled back and having to meet the orders of major brand names.
Consumers don’t know this and continue to fall for the sharks on eBay,
It’s sad.
I learned my lesson, I thought I was cutting out the middle men. Not true. I suppose people will just have to learn the hard way as I did. I lost a lot of work, gone. Gone for good. It hurt.

Well, since you ask I do have an opinion and a few comments, perhaps. As of late there are various websites that have surfaced in the face of the American recession. These sites call themselves “1 sale a day” websites and they usually consist of overstock items, or ‘bankrupt stock’, what have you but the bottom line is way lower than it ever was! Heck, I just bought this pda/phone from HP I remember when this phone was $499.00 not long ago.. I just picked it up from a reputable 1 sale a day site that I’ve been buying stuff from for about a year now and the deals I’m getting are putting me into a redzone with my wife.. but I couldn’t be happier and my home now finally has all the cool stuff I couldn’t ever afford! ie., flatpanel tv’s, surround sound systems, Ipods, amazing swiss watches for under $200??
My point believe it or not because I’m taking a long way around to explain it and am actually guilty in ways too.. is that I do believe our country as a whole has gone on a mad, manic overwhelming smothering of, digital, lcd, HDTV, BluRay,Duo-Core, Intel, Quad Band, Fiber Optics, Hybrid, WiFi, Laser, Router, Ipod, Iphone, Mp3,SD Cards, Flash (had to include these) yada yada yada, products..
Consumers in America have been bombarded with technologies and a never ending advancement of these technologies and to be honest I think we stand to possibly be, collectively, on the down side of an American Bipolar episode! For Gods sakes can America and the world not be a little more ‘in-control’ of spacing these new technologies out? Money, money, money…. Oh I’m so sick of the digital generation SICK OF IT!!! “I’m a computer maker, I have a good idea.. let’s not make computers run fast.. then we’ll charge for Ram and make gazillions of dollars on replaceable Ram chips that people will just keep buying and buying to keep their computers up with all Microsoft’s upgdates and upgrades”? 8mb, 16mb, 32mb, 64mb, 128mb, 256mb, 512mb, 1GB, 2GB,3GB,4GB (that’s what my touchsmart has now). Oh boy.. how can America and our world not be in a recession when we are all so exhausted with all the stimulation that is constantly be fed into our faces on tv, radio, magazines?? The American dream and free enterprise means that there is no limit so long as there is demand but what is being overlooked is the consumer’s own realistic ability to exhibit a safe and sound self-control.. and that the human being is not able to do but we are buying and selling ourselves into a frenzy.. it’s just too much ..
phew!

Hi Gerry,
The FrankenFlash project has been around for about 20 months now. The internet presence is exactly one year old, there has been much cause for reflection.
Who is exactly to blame?
It is a combination of both buyers, sellers and wholesalers. It is the drive and demand for unrealistic prices that is the main source. Recently on dhgate.com there have been plea’s from some sellers, to have potential buyers wake up and accept the true costs of flash chips. FakeFlashNews may be publishing more on that soon.
The problem for a lot of FAB’s (that’s what they call the chip manufacturing facilities), is that to keep the factories open and running they have to produce a minimum amount of chips. There is a lot of production and surplus stock for small capacity chips. Some supplier are pleading because they DO NOT WANT TO SELL “upgraded” read, reprogrammed chips. But the buyers – importers are demanding the rediculous prices. The end result is that they send fakes, in reality, chip sizes in line with the prices paid.
Consumers drive the fake flash market, not the other way around.
No demand, no supply.
To buy American. OUCH! The project is wincing, for one main reason. Do you know how many eBay fake flash sellers in the United Status waved the stars and strips in their listings, with US Seller? The fact is, the fakes can from abroad. And yes, the prices were a lot higher. Still it was the same fakes as being sold in the orient with a good market for the priviledge of buying from an American Fake Flash Seller! Catching the American fake flash sellers is a lot harder as fellow citizen’s are reluctant to rat them out. They just don’t want to believe it and will prefer any story but the truth. Defective sounds good, anything but fake and counterfeit!
In many ways, everyone is responsible. We all want unrealistic prices. Often we do not know what the realistic price is. The project is trying to help explain and promote awareness on the costs. Difficult to get but we did have some assistence. This information is now being included on most alerts on fake flash sellers.
Times are hard. People need to reflect. We must all help our respective countries by trying to buy local and if it is possible goods made locally to support our troubled economies. If the goods we need are not made locally then one should buy from reputable stores. Brand name flash based technology for usb flash drives, mp players and memory cards should only be purchased from authorized distributors or retailers. Fakes and counterfeits are usually, 50% to 60% of the real genuine item. Not worth the nightmare that comes with bargains.
The real truth is that the mark up on brand name items is modest. The money is made in moving sheer volume. The deals come when large retail chains agree to move in volume to help a Brand name clear out old inventory for items soon to be discontinued. In North American, “Deal” and “Sale” exist. In other parts of the world, especially Europe and the UK what they call a sale, North American’s call – regular price. Technology is very expensive in a lot of regions of the world and people from these countries are very vunerable to eBay fake flash sellers.
Do you think, Gerry we have all become t0o greedy? This slogan “Pay less, get more” as been burned into our minds for the last 20 years of advertising. The truth is, pay less, get less.

okay, I’ll do that for sure.. I know another site called http://www.dhgate.com they sell just about everything that his fake, they are in China.. if you think you’re getting for example a Seiko Sportura.. you pay like $140 and the guy sends you a cheap plastic swatch?? It’s like WTF is this??
Another good reason to buy American I guess we the ‘deal-seekers’ are the cause for that fake market to begin with.. and I can’t let the ‘over-pricing’ Americans off the hook either.. People think that because they want to live a lavish lifestyle that we American’s have to pay these highly

I’m all for shutting down scammers but to be honest most American’s will always think that things are just made cheaper in China because they pay cheap labor and because of this we here in the USA pay less. Also as an American who sees ‘made in China’ on just about every single item on every American store shelf we begin to feel that the Asian market is very busy and capable of making electronics so why should any of us believe they can’t make a cheaper SD card? That’s my only question and I hope you reply.
Thanks btw, I support your efforts if the cards are fake. I ordered one a 16gb card and if it comes and shows the capacity of 16gb’s and holds that much data what should I say to you then? I guess I would have to say that maybe you got a defective one? I’m only playing devil’s advocate. I am right now crossing my fingers because, well, whenever we aim to get over on the market value we always know there is some risk.. but for jim’s sakes the card is less than 20 bucks.
